Short Bio:
Daniel Jaffe has been President of the Giant Magellan Telescope since January 2026. From 2016 to 2025, Jaffe was Vice President for Research at the University of Texas at Austin where he supported a doubling of research activity and significant growth in research impact across all fields. He also holds a Professorship in Astronomy at UT where his astronomical interests include young stars, protoplanetary systems, and the dense interstellar medium. Jaffe’s group at UT works in both device development and instrumentation. The group’s silicon diffractive optics have been used on both NASA (SOFIA and JWST) and ground-based (iSHELL, IGRINS, IGRINS-2) instruments. The team’s IGRINS instrument and its GMT instrument GMTNIRS are leading the way in sensitive, high-resolution infrared spectroscopy.
