In this CELPIP Success Podcast workshop, we tackle one of the biggest challenges test-takers face: using prepositions correctly. If you've ever felt stuck trying to memorize preposition rules, this episode is for you.
Key takeaway: Don't try to memorize prepositions. Instead, learn the words and phrases they commonly pair with — that's how you naturally absorb the rules.
The exercise covered in this episode:
Pick a random article to read (a Canadian source like CBC is great for CELPIP prep)
As you read, look for prepositions and prepositional phrases
Write down the full phrase, not just the preposition (e.g., "on Wednesday," "away from work," "on the lake")
Create your own sentences using those phrases
Not sure if something is a prepositional phrase? Google it to check!
Examples from the episode:
"on Wednesday" → "I am going to visit my family on Wednesday."
"on the weekend" (not "in the weekend!") → "I am going to relax on the weekend."
"away from work" → "I am going on vacation, so I will be away from work."
Resources mentioned:
CBC.ca — Canadian news source for reading practice
A Google Doc or word processor for taking notes (pen and paper work too!)
Tips for CELPIP preparation:
Read Canadian content regularly to build familiarity with Canadian English
Practice this exercise for just 5–10 minutes a day
Focus on phrases, not isolated rules
The more you practice, the more natural prepositions become
