You're alone. Walking home, washing the dishes, lying in bed with the lights off. Someone says your name, right behind you, in a voice you know. Your mother. Your best friend. Your own voice. CastVenk calls it the Caller. It has no voice of its own, so it borrows the ones you trust, and every time you answer, it learns a little more of yours.
Seven rules. Most people break the second one. The seventh one you have already broken.

🔬 THE REAL SCIENCE BEHIND THE RULES
• The cocktail party effect: in dichotic listening tests, many people heard their own name in the message they were told to ignore. Moray, 1959, Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.
https://doi.org/10.1080/1747021590841...
• The cone of confusion: sounds in front of and behind you reach both ears almost identically, so listeners often mix up front and back.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_l...
• Hypnagogic hallucinations: in a UK survey of about 5,000 people, roughly 37% reported them. Ohayon, Priest, Caulet & Guilleminault, 1996, British Journal of Psychiatry.
https://doi.org/10.1192/bjp.169.4.459
• AI voice cloning scams: the U.S. Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers clone a loved one's voice from a short clip. Hang up and call the person back on a number you know.
https://consumer.ftc.gov/node/80688
• "The hallucinations of widowhood": almost half of ~300 widowed people reported seeing, hearing or feeling their late spouse. Rees, 1971, BMJ.
https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.4.5778.37
• Folklore: the Chinese belief in three protective flames on the head and shoulders, and the Appalachian warning never to answer or follow a loved one's voice calling from the woods.
🛡 REAL ADVICE: agree on a family code word, and never send money because of a phone call alone. If a "loved one" calls in trouble, hang up and call them back yourself.
⚠️ FICTION NOTICE
The Caller, the case files (027, 088, 004) and the CastVenk 1994 broadcast are fictional, created for entertainment. The scientific facts listed above are real and linked to their sources. Hearing your name as you fall asleep, or hearing a loved one's voice after they die, is common and normal; if it happens often or causes you distress, talk to a doctor.
