The SS United States was the fastest ocean liner to ever cross the Atlantic. A marvel of American ingenuity and engineering, it was peak design in the twilight of an industry that was giving way to the jet age. Decades after decommissioning and unsuccessful restoration attempts, the mighty ship is destined to become the world's largest artificial reef and a premier dive spot off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
In this episode, we pay tribute to it in a flagship of our own, the legendary BMW E38 740i M Sport. Along with the E39 5 Series, the E38 7 Series marked the end of the era of the analog driver-centric BMW. It was the last and greatest evolution of the old-school traditional BMW design language and experience. The 740i "M Sport" was the best of the E38s and was offered only for the final two years of production. This pristine example has its volume turned up slightly, with some aftermarket mods thanks to FCP Euro: https://www.fcpeuro.com.
In our longest journey yet, we put this 740i M Sport to the ultimate test, a twenty-hour road trip to Mobile, Alabama, to explore the Midwest, Ozark Mountains, and post-industrial South to pay our respects to one of the greatest engineering feats of the industrial era before it meets its final resting place beneath the waves.
*Bonus: see if you can find the F-14 Tomcat hidden in the adventure.
