What happens when a living pumpkin begins to wonder what makes him himself? 🎃 A forgotten character from the original Wizard of Oz books explores identity, mortality, and the strange magic of being alive.
“When the Lantern Goes Out” reimagines Jack Pumpkinhead from L. Frank Baum's The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904). Brought to life by the magical Powder of Life, Jack is a curious wooden figure with a pumpkin for a head. But pumpkins don't last forever, and when his head must be replaced, an unsettling question remains: is he still the same Jack?
Through whimsical gothic folk, a crooked Victorian waltz, music-box melodies, and haunting orchestral arrangements, the song explores the fear of being forgotten and the hope that our memories, friendships, and experiences make us more than our appearance.
A little Halloween magic, a little melancholy, and a journey down the yellow brick road.
When the Lantern Goes Out is an original character-inspired song based on L. Frank Baum's public-domain Oz stories.
The Bard in Black is a project where classic literature, mythology, and folklore collide through original songs. Each story takes on a musical style chosen to match its characters, setting, and themes. Music is created with AI-assisted tools as part of the creative process.
*Myths collide. Stories become songs. The story chooses the sound.*
