This 6-month-old 256GB iPhone 17 Pro Max belongs to our follower. With just 147 charge cycles and 99% battery health, he initially expected 256GB to be sufficient, but real-world use quickly left him short on storage. He sent it in for a one-step upgrade to the 2TB top spec.
The device comes with a Toshiba K8A7 S6E high-speed NAND flash. We removed the original chip via the physical polishing method. Since the 2TB NAND is wider and thicker, we removed the non-functional "dam" capacitors on both sides — these are also absent on factory 2TB units and do not affect circuit stability — and installed a Toshiba K8B2 high-speed NAND chip. The upgrade was completed with solder reballing, BGA underfill and constant-temperature reflow soldering at 100°C.
Airtightness is fully restored after reassembly. The upgraded 2TB drive reaches 200,000 points in speed tests, with further improved read/write performance and ample storage for all use cases.
