Can solar panels and wind turbines really supply all our electricity? Producing enough over a year is only part of the challenge.
In Planet Decode EP02, we explore energy versus power, annual generation versus round-the-clock reliability, and plant-level costs versus the cost of an entire electricity system.
Discover how grids, interconnections, storage, flexible demand and other resources work together — and why geography changes the answer. We also explain why “100% solar and wind”, “100% renewable” and “100% low-carbon” are different questions.

SCIENTIFIC CLARIFICATIONS
• The 500 TWh country and daily profiles are illustrative examples, not observations for a real country.
• The 17% figure refers to global electricity generation from solar and wind in 2025, not total energy consumption.
• USD 44/MWh for solar PV and USD 33/MWh for onshore wind are global weighted average levelised generation costs for new projects commissioned in 2025. They are not retail prices or complete system costs.
• Negative wholesale prices do not mean free household electricity.
• A balanced annual energy total does not, on its own, demonstrate reliable hourly supply.
