In the spring of 1962, the Vatican condemned an American film actress by name, and only her. Elizabeth Taylor, then in Rome filming Cleopatra opposite the Welsh actor Richard Burton, had drawn from the Holy See a description that followed her for the rest of her life: erotic vagrancy. Burton, the other half of the relationship, escaped unnamed. Over the fourteen years after that ruling, the two of them married twice, divorced twice, appeared together in eleven films, and assembled one of the largest private fortunes ever accumulated by two working actors.
