He asks how many have read about Hannibal, the general who marched out of Africa into Italy with elephants and crushed Rome in battle after battle - at Lake Trasimene and then Cannae, where more than 80,000 Romans were killed and the city braced itself for him to walk through its gates. No general could stop him. So Rome tried something different: they put Fabius Maximus in charge, and instead of meeting Hannibal in battle, he just kept drawing him around and starving him out. The Senate hated the slow plan and pushed for a direct fight - which is exactly how they lost at Cannae. Hannibal still camped outside Rome for eight years without ever taking the city. The lesson: it is more important to outthink your enemy than to outfight him.
