Rukmda Devi a.k.a Rukma Bai (1954-2011) was a wonderful female folk singer from Barmer, Rajasthan. The first woman from the Manganiyar Muslim community to sing in public. Her music was inspired by the places and the people's struggle for survival in the sands of the Thar desert of Rajasthan. She had an exceptionally difficult life confronting polio in her youth and challenging the Muslim society and cultural norms of her Manganyiar community by doing public performances.
