Airborne Gimbal with a Bal Seal® Spring-energized Seal

The Bal Seal® spring-energized low friction seal helps designers of gimbals, pods, turrets, and pan-tilt systems win the battle against friction while greatly reducing the risk of potential failure caused by environmental contaminants. This custom-engineered seal, suitable for both azimuth and elevation applications, exhibits minimal "stiction" force for jitter-free target tracking in air, land and sea applications. It delivers superior performance in temperatures ranging from -60 °C to +80 °C, and in dry or moist environments. Available seal materials are compatible with a variety of harsh chemicals (i.e., jet fuels, solvents, Skydrol), and their inherent lubricity eliminates the need for greases and oils. The seal is compatible with relatively soft metals, such as uncoated stainless steel, and it can be customized to meet specific sealing, frictional and life requirements.
