Redox sounds like two separate things, but it's really one: electrons moving from one substance to another. One loses them, the other gains them — at the same time. The whole topic fits in four letters: OIL RIG (Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain). In this video I explain redox reactions for Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620), topic 6.4.
We cover oxidation and reduction defined by electron transfer (OIL RIG), why oxidation and reduction always happen together, how to spot which species is oxidised and which is reduced, oxidising agents and reducing agents, and how to use oxidation numbers (and colour changes in tests) to identify redox reactions. Once you see it's all about electrons, redox stops being confusing.
