When the Wings Appeared | The Ride of Sobieski | Good News Soul Winners

On August 17, 1629, King Jan III Sobieski of Poland was born. Nearly four centuries later, his courageous ride to Vienna remains one of the most valiant true stories in history. In 1683, Ottoman forces laid siege to Vienna, threatening to break through the gateway to the heart of Christian Europe. After two months of bombardment, hunger, and mounting desperation, the city’s defenders were running out of time. Sobieski answered the call. He led approximately 30,000 Polish soldiers across hundreds of miles to join the allied Christian forces outside Vienna. On September 12, Sobieski commanded a massive cavalry assault involving approximately 18,000 horsemen—with the legendary Polish Winged Hussars at its heart. When the wings appeared, thunder rolled across the sky. The charge shattered the Ottoman lines, broke the siege, and helped turn the battle into a decisive Christian victory. Vienna was saved, and Sobieski became one of history’s most celebrated defenders of Christendom. Afterward, the victorious king declared: “We came, we saw—God conquered.” WHEN THE WINGS APPEARED (The Ride of Sobieski) An original cinematic anthem from Good News Soul Winners honoring faith, courage, and the freedom to hear, believe, and proclaim the Gospel.
