Norfolk & Western 429: The Blacksburg Mixed [4K]

On a frigid, blustery winter evening during the final years of steam on the Norfolk & Western Railway, the sounds of a lone whistle and plumes of smoke fill the air. This evening, Norfolk & Western 4-8-0 "M" Class #429 is assigned a mixed train along the Abingdon Branch through the town of Nella and arrival at Blacksburg. In reality, 429 was scrapped several decades ago. The locomotive, a popular subject of O. Winston Link's renown photography, was alive and well on the Strasburg Rail Road with the help of some cosmetic alterations to #475. In collaboration with ‪@DynamoProductions-trains‬ and the O. Winston Link Museum, a coordinated photo charter took place involving 475's sister locomotive, 429. With lighted, staged scenes along the "Road to Paradise" and the addition of actors and name changes to structures, photographers and videographers were able to capture nighttime scenes inspired by Link's famous works involving the N&W. Despite the low temperatures, the event created memorable scenes reminiscent of the lost "M" Class working hard through Abingdon Branch. History of N&W 429 (475): Norfolk & Western 475 is a 4-8-0 "M" class locomotive built in 1906 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, PA. She would be delegated to haul heavy freight and coal trains. Later in her career, she would be replaced by larger locomotives and work on various branches along the N&W's trackage. After completing a faithful 50 years of service, she was retired in 1956. After being saved from the scrappers torch in 1980, the locomotive exchanged hands with many owners, and was finally purchased by the Strasburg Rail Road Company in 1991 and was restored to operating service in 1993. In 2018, she was set to undergo a mandatory 1,472 day inspection, and was returned to service in late 2019 with a centered headlight. She continues to serve the Strasburg Rail Road in reliable service today.
