What is it REALLY like to live on a boat in the UK? 🚤🇬🇧 I’ve always been curious about people who choose to live on boats along the canals of Britain. So when I got the chance to meet a family living the boat life, I decided to spend the day with them and see what everyday life on a boat is actually like. And honestly, this experience completely changed some of my ideas about boat life. One of the first questions I asked was probably not the usual question: “I’m single… if I start boat life, how am I going to meet girls?” 😂 The answer I got was simple: the boat community is friendly, there are lots of people around, and I shouldn’t worry about it! But the real surprise came when I met their children. They were outside running around, cycling, climbing trees, playing together and even making their own funny “poisonous potions” using leaves and things they found around them. 🌿😂 There was so much freedom and positive energy. I also met a young girl living the boat life who taught me about swans. 🦢 She gave me some grass to feed them, and the swans actually ate it! What started as a simple moment turned into a really interesting lesson about these beautiful birds. Of course, I also ended up playing with the kids and doing some one-arm push-ups! 😄 Later, I met their father, Paul, who showed me what is actually involved in making boat life work. I got to see the bicycles they use for shopping and getting around, the smaller boat they keep attached to the main boat for additional storage, and all the clever ways they organise everyday life when you have limited space. Then I went inside the boat and got a proper tour. Paul showed me: 🚤 How their living space is organised 🛏️ Their bedroom and the kids' room 🚿 Their small bathroom ☀️ How they use solar power for electricity 🔥 How they use a fire to keep the boat warm 🗑️ How they deal with waste 🚲 How they get around and do their shopping 💷 The costs and charges involved in keeping a boat on the canal 📋 Some of the practical rules and logistics involved in boat life One of the biggest things I learned was that boat life isn't necessarily about working from home or being self-employed. Before this experience, I assumed most people living on boats had jobs that allowed them to work remotely. But I met an occupational therapist who works for the NHS and comes back to her boat after finishing her work shift. That completely changed the way I looked at this lifestyle. Boat life isn't simply about living on a boat. For many people, it's a different way of building a life — with community, nature, family, freedom and a much simpler way of using space and resources. As someone experiencing this from the perspective of a Malayali living in the UK, I found the whole experience fascinating.
