Two Walking Together. | Photographing Shikoku Pilgrimage Ep.5

Five temples. One expert. One very small car. Temples 18 through 22 mark the end of Tokushima (almost!) — the first of four prefectures on the Shikoku Pilgrimage — and seem like a reasonable moment to address the fact that I have been mentioning Kōbō Daishi for four episodes without explaining who he actually was. Dr. Cornelius Fawcett-Hume, Reader in Kōbō Daishi Hagiography and Pre-Heian Pilgrimage Infrastructure, was kind enough to help. Kōbō Daishi founded 88 temples. Recited a mantra one million times at the age of nineteen. Built Japan's largest reservoir in three months. Dug an unreasonable number of wells. According to Shingon doctrine, he is also still alive — a fact that raises certain logistical questions about passenger space in a kei camper. I am forty (almost!). 88 Temples. One Lens. One Year.
