Two hundred Watchers, an oath on Mount Hermon, the giants, and the archangels sent to bind them: this is what the Book of the Watchers (1 Enoch 1-36) actually says, read chapter by chapter in R. H. Charles's public-domain translation. We compare it with Genesis 6:1-4 and Jude 14-15 (KJV), and look at why the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox churches hold 1 Enoch as scripture while most other Christian and Jewish traditions do not.

• 1 Enoch 7-8: the giants; Azazel teaches weapons and other arts
• 1 Enoch 9-11: Michael, Uriel, Raphael and Gabriel intercede; Noah warned; Watchers bound for seventy generations
• 1 Enoch 12-16: Enoch, the scribe of righteousness, carries judgement to the Watchers; the giants' spirits called evil spirits
• Jude 14-15 closely matches 1 Enoch 1:9
• 1773: James Bruce brings Ge'ez copies to Europe; 1821: first English translation (Richard Laurence)
• Aramaic fragments found in Qumran Cave 4; 4Q201 dated c. 200-150 BC
• Canonical today in the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo churches and among Beta Israel
Question for you: Did you know that Jude quotes 1 Enoch, and does that change how you read his letter?
