Cy Touff & Richie Kamuca – Primitive Cats (Full Album)

Cy Touff & Richie Kamuca present their album Primitive Cats. By the time these sessions were cut, bass trumpet specialist Cy Touff had spent nearly two years in Woody Herman's trombone section, and tenor player Richie Kamuca, also a Herman Herd alumnus, shared the spotlight with him here. The record splits into two dates recorded at L.A.'s Forum Theatre in December 1955: a quintet session on the 5th built around extended solos from Touff and Kamuca alongside pianist Pete Jolly, and an octet session on the 4th featuring trumpeters Harry Edison and Conrad Gozzo, with Johnny Mandel and Ernie Wilkins charts pushing the band into a walking, Basie-tinged swing. This reissue restores "It's Sand, Man", left off the original Pacific Jazz LP, and closes with an alternate take of "A Smooth One".
