Born in Danville, Virginia, on 19 May 1879, Nancy Langhorne left her first husband on their honeymoon and married Waldorf Astor in 1906, a man born on exactly the same day. His father gave them Cliveden and the 55-carat Sancy diamond, then accepted a peerage that forced Waldorf out of the House of Commons when the old man died in October 1919. Nancy stood for his Plymouth seat to keep it warm, won by a majority of 5,203, and on 1 December 1919 became the first woman to take her seat in the Commons. She held it for more than 25 years. Then the one man who had sent her there decided she had to go.
