Motorcycle road trip in Portugal with my 10-year-old son: 4 days, 900 km from Lisbon down to the Algarve and back through the Alentejo, on a Royal Enfield Himalayan 411, road and off-road.
Four days, three nights, one motorbike, two helmets.
My son and I have done a lot of road trips. Europe, Portugal in every direction. But always with a shell around us: a door, a window, music. This time we climbed onto the same seat, and everything changed.
We rode down from Lisbon to Sagres, followed the Vicentine coast and the Algarve, taking the dirt tracks wherever there were any, then headed back up through the Alentejo and home to Lisbon.
The bike: a Royal Enfield Himalayan 411. Not fast, comfortable, unkillable. It does exactly what you ask of it the moment the tarmac ends.
The gear: two blue mechanic's overalls. Mine is a Wildust Sisters customed. We wore them all four days. They are our crew uniform.
What I didn't know before leaving: a child behind you changes the way you ride before it changes the way you travel. You brake earlier. You look further ahead. You stop chasing anything. He sleeps, he sings, he taps your shoulder when he wants to stop, and you stop.
In a car you talk. On a bike you can't. I found out what it does to cross a country with your child pressed against you, not a word for hours, and to arrive in the evening feeling you've said everything.
What I wanted to give him, I think it's this: a taste for discomfort you choose. The heat, the dust, the aching body, the bag you repack every morning. And at the end of it, a light on the Vicentine coast no screen was ever going to give him.
This video is the story of those four days. The route is in it, if you want to ride it yourself.
If you're hesitating about taking your child on the road: he's ready before you are.
