Where was Jesus between His death on the cross and His resurrection on the third day?
The Gospels tell us that Jesus was buried in a tomb. But what happened during the silence of that Saturday? Where was His spirit? And what did Peter mean when he wrote that Christ “went and preached unto the spirits in prison” in 1 Peter 3:19?
In this Bible study, we examine one of the most mysterious questions in Christianity through the Scriptures themselves.
We explore the meaning of **Sheol and Hades**, Jesus’ promise to the repentant thief in Luke 23:43, Peter’s words in Acts 2:31, and the difficult passage in 1 Peter 3:18–20. We also examine three major Christian interpretations of the spirits in prison and consider what the surrounding biblical context actually supports.
Did Jesus descend into hell? Was He proclaiming victory over rebellious spiritual powers? Or does Peter’s passage point to something that happened in the days of Noah?
These questions have been debated by Christians for centuries. Rather than pretending every mystery has an easy answer, we carefully distinguish what Scripture clearly states from what remains uncertain.
One truth stands at the heart of this study: Jesus entered death, but death could not hold Him.
