How much does food cost in Japan? A gyudon beef bowl is 450 yen, a Kyoto kaiseki course can be 20,000 — so is eating in Japan cheap or expensive?
The answer is both. We climb a price ladder of 15 traditional Japanese dishes, with what each one is, what it costs at a real, named place, and one ordering tip.
In this video:
・Onigiri and gyudon: 213 yen at 7-Eleven, 450 at Sukiya, 460 at Matsuya, 498 at Yoshinoya (spring / May 2026)
・Udon and soba: Marugame Seimen 390 and 440 yen, Yudetaro kake soba 430 yen, and the cafeteria-style trick
・Japanese curry and conveyor belt sushi: CoCo Ichibanya 646 yen, Sushiro plates from 110 yen
・Tonkatsu, tendon and okonomiyaki: Matsunoya 840, Tenya 860, Chibo 980 yen — and free refills of rice and cabbage
・Ramen prices and the "1,000 yen wall": Ichiran 980 to 1,180 yen, and why you buy a ticket from the machine first
・Yakitori and takoyaki: Torikizoku 410 yen for every item
・Matcha and wagashi in Kyoto, sukiyaki at Asakusa Imahan (2,970 to 7,700 yen at lunch)
・Kaiseki in Kyoto: 6,000-yen lunch, 11,000-yen dinner — and a food budget for a day in Japan (about 4,019 yen)
Prices change often — treat them as a guide and check menus on the day.
