Marvin "Smitty" Smith: "Understand Your Role and Purpose" — 15 Years Behind Leno

15 and a half years behind the Tonight Show kit. Over 3,200 shows. And Marvin "Smitty" Smith will tell you the band was never the main event — that's exactly the lesson. Smitty came up in Waukegan, Illinois beating on pots and pans, went to Berklee, and was gigging with Jon Hendricks at 19. He sat in on two tunes at a New York jam session; Frank Foster took his number and called nine months later to put the two Franks back together. From there: the Jazztet, Dave Holland, Sonny Rollins, Grover Washington Jr., Terence Blanchard, and the M-Base years with Steve Coleman and Five Elements — before the call came that put him on television five nights a week. The part every young player needs is in the middle of this one. "You are the third option," Smitty says of house-band work — the host is first, the guests are second, and you are playing the commercial breaks. His point isn't that it's a lesser gig. It's that it's a different one: understand your function, understand your role and purpose inside that function, and you can make real music in any situation you're put in.
