The only small problem was that the converter had to handle up to 200 amps. So I ended up designing a six-phase interleaved DC-DC boost converter with custom aluminum PCBs, massive copper busbars and a chunky aluminum enclosure. Somewhere along the way, the $1,000 project turned into warped PCBs, questionable engineering decisions, a lot of soldering and moving hundreds of components from one board to another. But, eventually, everything came together and started looking suspiciously like an actual power converter.
