One person joins the civil service and the service slowly enters the life of the entire family. Over sixteen years in the IAS, I saw how an officer’s career shapes much more than official work. It affects a spouse’s career, children’s upbringing, ageing parents, friendships and social gatherings and, over time, even the family’s sense of its own status. Civil service offers genuine privileges: security, respect, access, good accommodation in many postings and extraordinary experiences. But the benefits and costs are not distributed equally. One person receives the posting, while the spouse, children and parents repeatedly adjust their lives around it. This video is neither a celebration of privilege nor a story of endless sacrifice. It is an honest reflection on the social and personal lives of civil servants—and on what happens when the designation no longer remains confined to the office.
