On my Marshall JVM410H head and 1960B cabinet, I wanted to share some of the tones I’ve been dialling in and I thought what better way than a small inspired improv switching between them. Starting with more heavier playing, some riffs I always have fun with before gradually shifting into a more melodic improvised solo then ending in a Carnatic (South Indian Classical) inspired ending, which I have been working on a lot lately. This was very fun to put together and I’m happy with how it shows different styles and how they work the Marshall amp I got. I want to demonstrate the tone through feeling with the musical journey than just plainly run through them like a demo so I hope you all enjoy this too.
==== Contents of this Video ====
00:00 - Wherever I May Roam – Metallica
00:23 - Into The Pit – Testament
00:40 - Improv Solo (original)
01:08 - “3111” – Exodus
01:50 - Wings for Marie – TOOL
02:28 - Carnatic-style improvised outro
Tone approach (as shown in the video):
OD1 Orange → darker groove
OD1 Red → high gain rhythm / aggressive sections
OD2 Orange → lead tone (used for improv)
OD2 Red → modern heavy tone
Clean → clean tone for the melodic section
All tone changes were done directly on the amp using the footswitch, with the guitar plugged straight in. The sound is captured using a mic on the cabinet, so what you’re hearing is the natural response of the amp in the room without even my helix or any additional amp simulators.
Though of course the exact clarity, tone, chugs and raw sound in a room is difficult to capture, nevertheless the versatility is so perfect for different styles like how I play in and it’s inspiring to just play with it.
A big thank you to Marshall for the support. I’ve been really enjoying exploring this awesome setup and this video is showing that journey!
Hope you all enjoy it!
