Every work of architecture holds the memory of the origins of the elements it was made from. From that memory, it is possible to construct new knowledge and meanings.
Our installation for The Architectural League of New York is an architectural/audio piece made from the sounds of some of the materials and construction processes used for our projects. With these fragments of sensory experiences that speak of material qualities and resonate in our subjective perception with atmospheres and meanings—like architecture itself—we created a new variation that comes from the same ground.
Together with acclaimed musician and percussionist Diego Espinosa and visual artist David Sefami, we have constructed a sound piece accompanied by a video showing images of the processes heard: copper plates forged by fire and hammer; galvanized steel tubes cut to transform from fence to xylophone; rubble with marble aggregates sliced to be reused as the support for a vegetal pergola. All these metamorphoses elicited new intangible experiences, both in their making and in the final result.
At TO we believe in dialogue, in teamwork. We believe in the powerful beauty of simple things, of clear spatial and tectonic solutions grounded in light, acoustics, orientation, wind, weight, and the quality of materials. We like to build what we design because it brings us closer to the intimate production processes of our profession.
