Below the cliffs, an ancient pōhutukawa tree — over eight hundred years old — marks the spot where Māori legend says departing spirits leap into the sea on their final journey. When the small wooden fragment Yuzuki has carried since Egypt is placed on a weathered stone marked with the same ancient symbol, the sky itself seems to tear open. A colossal water column erupts from where the two oceans meet, and Tangaroa manifests in full for the first time — a being constantly losing and regaining its own shape, radiating pain the travelers can feel in their bones. Hinna's barrier strains and nearly breaks under the assault. It's Hanna who finally steps forward, her small frame carrying the weight of generations of inherited prayer, refusing to fight the god and instead speaking directly to his suffering. Her light reaches Tangaroa, easing — but not ending — his agony, before she collapses from having given everything she has. The real reckoning, she warns through exhaustion, is still to come.
