I GREW UP WATCHING RAMAYANA ON KBC. NOW LOOK AT WHAT THEY HAVE DONE WITH IT! When I was growing up in Kenya in the 1990s, Sunday television meant one thing for many of us: Ramayana. Decades later, the legendary Indian epic is returning in a massive cinematic production, and I couldn't resist watching the official trailer. In this 3dAfrika reaction and review, I take a look at RAMAYANA: RISE OF A LEGEND, and there's a lot to talk about. The action, the creatures, the costumes, the enormous scale, the visual effects and that unmistakable Indian cinematic colour palette. This production looks like it is going all out. But there's something even more interesting here. India is embracing its own mythology and presenting its cultural stories to the world with confidence. And that raises a question I've often asked about Kenyan filmmaking: why are we so quick to borrow storytelling conventions from the West instead of developing and celebrating our own cultural stories? We have our own legends, mythology, history and extraordinary characters. Perhaps there's something important we can learn from the Indian film industry. I also revisit the original Ramayana television series that many of us watched on KBC, compare the old and new interpretations of Ram and Sita, and share some memories that will take fellow 90s viewers straight back. I'm genuinely excited about this film. I want to see the finished product, and I'm planning to watch it. 🎬 *IN THIS REVIEW:* Growing up with Ramayana on KBC. The new film's spectacular action and visual effects. Indian cinematic colour and production design. Ram, Sita, Hanuman and the mythology. Comparing the new production with the original television series. Why Indian filmmakers embrace their cultural identity. What Kenyan filmmakers can learn from this approach. The upcoming two-part cinematic epic. 🇮🇳 *A SPECIAL MESSAGE TO THE INDIAN COMMUNITY IN KENYA:* This one is for you, especially those who grew up with the original series. And to my fellow Africans who remember watching Ramayana on KBC every Sunday, I know you understand the nostalgia! 👇 *JOIN THE CONVERSATION* Did you grow up watching Ramayana?
