The square is renowned because it is one of the most beautiful and one of the largest squares in Transylvania & Romania. Another famous feature of the square is the Matthias Corvinus Statue/Monument, a bronze sculpture paying homage to Matthias Corvinus, also called Matthias I. Matthias Corvinus was king of Hungary and Croatia between 1458 and 1490 and was born in Cluj-Napoca. This historic monument is the creation of János Fadrusz, who has made a small plaster model of the statue and sent it to the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. He was awarded the Grand Prix (gold medal) of the expo, the highest award at the World Exhibition. The square is surrounded by historical buildings and monuments, where once, only the most respectable and upper class families lived. Today, it is a lively, colorful space with restaurants, cafes and it is a place used for different fairs, events, concerts.
