The history of Atlantis begins with a sentence that stops in the middle of a breath. Everything ever said about the lost island comes out of two texts by Plato, and the second one, the Critias, breaks off mid-sentence, just as the king of the gods opens his mouth to pass judgment. This is the complete story of what that unfinished scroll set loose in the world, told slowly: the priests of Egypt who told Solon that all Greeks are children, the rings of bronze and water, the temple under an ivory sky, the ten kings who judged each other in the dark, the single terrible day and night in which the island sank, and then the twenty three centuries of searching that followed. A map with the south on top, a congressman who made the drowned world respectable, a sleeping prophet and his crystal, the real buried town under the ash of Santorini with swallows still painted on its walls, and the real cities the sea did take. A calm voice, old paintings, and quiet music. Made to fall asleep to, and just as good on a long night drive.
We tell the story as what it is: a tradition, told with care. Where Plato wrote it, we say so. Where later dreamers added to it, we tell their stories as their stories. Not as fact, and not as fiction.

SOURCES AND RIGHTS
Narration draws on public domain texts, retold in our own words: Plato's Timaeus and Critias (Jowett translation), Plutarch's Life of Solon, ancient testimonies via Strabo and Proclus, and Ignatius Donnelly's Atlantis: The Antediluvian World (1882). Later readings of the story, from Kircher to Blavatsky and Edgar Cayce, are told as reception history. All artwork is in the public domain: paintings by Thomas Cole, Claude Lorrain, Ivan Aivazovsky, Arnold Böcklin, Léon Bakst, Walter Crane and others, Athanasius Kircher's map of 1665, and the Bronze Age frescoes of Akrotiri and Knossos, via Wikimedia Commons.
