Broadcasted live on Twitch -- Watch live at   / thecowness   Part 1/2 -    • Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Troubadour Speedrun in...   Performed on a launch model New Nintendo 3DS XL with a video capture mod, and a real cartridge. This is me trying something different, just seeing what a Yugioh speedrun feels like. I beat the game casually, came up with my own route (by which I mostly mean the deck I built), did one practice run, and then two on-stream attempts. This isn't the best or fastest Yugioh game I've played, but having just finished it casually I was familiar with all the enemy decks, so there wasn't much studying to do. I'll have to try running a faster-paced game at some point, but this was fun; the RNG in duels is very similar to the RNG I enjoy dealing with in my RPG/Dragon Quest speedruns (the RNG of the city map is so bad though zzz). ---- The only resources I could find for this speedrun (granted I didn't ask anyone for help) were one run on SRC and one Google doc route in the YGO speedrunning Discord. The main two things I did differently from them are a little savescumming for rares, and the heavy use of Robbin' Goblin. Some of my routing choices cost some time to give me consistency, obviously the case with savescumming for cards, but my plan was to finish one run and walk away, so consistency was important. I scum Pot of Greed and Graceful Charity because two OP draw power cards for the entire 120-130 duel speedrun sounds good to me. I hope for as many Dark Elves and Jirai Gumos as the game will give me, because they're incredibly strong and the LP costs are almost always negligible. I bet Gumo's coin flip animations add up to some serious time loss, though. At level 7, I scummed for 3x Robbin' Goblin and The Forceful Sentry, but Forceful Sentry isn't worth it. Maybe Confiscation is? I happened to get one in this run and killed a couple important cards with it. Robbin' Goblin is great - if you have one once you take control of the field, your opponent isn't going to recover. I think Goblin saves time if you just compare animation time to faster wins, but savescumming to get three is still a time investment. But you might get that investment back if it lets you avoid enough of Solomon's Ordeal of a Traveler animations. The last card I savescummed for was Delinquent Duo after the Beginner Tournament. Kinda late to be savescumming, but that card is incredibly strong if it's in your starting hand. Should probably just use it if you get it, and don't waste time looking for it. After the Expert Tournament I pulled some Skill Drains, which I like in the final battles. A couple times while practicing Marik, he'd tributes three cards for Ra and then it has zero attack power in attack position, and then Obelisk punches it in the face. There are still some monsters it usefully shuts off in that duel and others. Without going back through the run, I had somewhere around nine defeats? Two before Solomon, a couple against the Big 5 (1, 2, and 4?), I think one each to Rebecca and Bakura, and then one each to final Joey and Marik. It wasn't a very clean run. I'm 40 minutes slower than the only other time on SRC, but his run was on emulator so the times may not be completely comparable. The scripted duels in the Expert Tournament run at almost exactly the same speed on his emulator as my system, so I think load times are comparable, but playing with a mouse on emulator feels so much better than using a stylus on console. Regardless, I'm happy with my time for the amount of effort I put into it.
