African elephants know a thing or two about self-care.
A sand bath might look like play, but it serves an important purpose. Using their trunks, elephants scoop up dust and sand and shower it over their bodies, creating a natural protective layer on their skin. This helps shield them from the harsh African sun, biting insects, and irritation. It can also help absorb excess moisture and soothe the skin after a swim or mud bath.
For elephants, a dusting of sand is a little like sunscreen, insect repellent, and a spa treatment rolled into one.
And, of course, there is something wonderfully joyful about watching an elephant disappear into a cloud of golden dust, emerging moments later looking quite pleased with itself.
At HERD, these simple, natural behaviours are reminders that every elephant carries generations of wisdom within them. Sometimes, the best way to care for yourself is to throw a little dust in the air and enjoy the moment. 🐘✨
