I Had Embu Completely Wrong (This Town Surprised Me)

If you've always wondered what Embu towb actually looks like on the ground, this 4K drive-through has you covered. Embu is the administrative capital of Embu County, sitting at around 1,400 metres above sea level on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kenya. That explains the mild air, the persistent greenery, and the cloudy sky you don't get at lower altitudes. The town is 130 kilometres northeast of Nairobi along the A2, the Nairobi–Meru highway, and it was the headquarters of the old Eastern Province before devolution restructured everything in 2013. You know you're entering Embu when you cross the Rupingazi River, a clean, fast-moving water draining directly from the Mount Kenya forest. What struck me most about the town itself is how well-planned it is by Kenyan urban standards. The University of Embu sits just 4 kilometres out along the same highway, while Moi Stadium handles the big public events. And if you want to get off the tarmac, Camp Ndunda Falls, tucked into the nearby forest, is a short, rewarding hike from town.
