Underground geologic storage is a critical enabler for scaling the hydrogen economy, particularly for long-duration and seasonal energy storage needs that surface systems cannot practically meet. This webinar will provide an overview of the evolving hydrogen landscape and examine practical considerations for safe, scalable subsurface hydrogen storage. The presentation will compare five geologic storage options and highlight key lessons from more than 60 years of natural gas storage experience and two decades of carbon storage research and deployment. Drawing on the 2023 USEA underground storage study and recent Battelle research, the webinar will offer actionable insights for industry professionals, government agencies, project developers, and researchers working to advance hydrogen infrastructure and enable commercial-scale deployment.
The presentation will also provide a brief primer on natural hydrogen, including its formation mechanisms, potential geologic settings, key exploration concepts, and the current status of exploration and research activity in this rapidly evolving field.
