Watch Hieronymus Bosch, The Garden of Earthly Delights, c. 1490–1500 come together stroke by stroke, from blank canvas to final touch, set to music by Albéniz. A triptych: Paradise on the left, the garden at the center, Hell and its burning city on the right. Over a white ground of chalk and glue, Bosch sketched a detailed underdrawing with the brush; infrared reflectography reveals changes of mind in all three panels. The oil is very thin, so the white ground lights the colors from beneath. He works from back to front and from large to small, down to the tree-man and the enormous musical instruments. This is an interpretive animation: a plausible reconstruction of how the canvas may have been painted, not a historical record of the artist's process.
