Govinda Dasi, one of Srila Prabhupada’s earliest disciples, shares memories of the intimate beginnings of the Hare Krishna movement and reads from her forthcoming book, Divinity.
She recalls meeting Srila Prabhupada in San Francisco in 1967, sitting with a small group of young disciples as he spoke about Krishna and the spiritual world, and witnessing the early growth of ISKCON from a tiny seedling into a worldwide mission.
In this reading from the chapter “When the Bells Stopped Ringing,” Govinda Dasi reflects on śabda-brahma—sacred transcendental sound—and the spiritual power she experienced in Srila Prabhupada’s voice and original words. She also explains her concern that later editorial changes diminished the distinctive voice and devotional force of his books, and why she believes those original words must be carefully preserved.
Govinda Dasi is the author of:
A Place of Sandalwood and Roses
Those Magical Days of Sandalwood and Roses
Her forthcoming book, Divinity, includes memories of traveling with Srila Prabhupada, the 1977 Kumbha Mela, Tulasi Devi in Hawaii, the installation of Pancha-tattva, and the history and preservation of Srila Prabhupada’s sacred words.
