The Real Cost of Cancelling Parandur Airport

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and his TVK government have fulfilled their promise to the protesting people of Parandur. Vijay says he is not against development or a second airport for Chennai, but insists that the Parandur Airport cannot come at the cost of agricultural land, water bodies and human settlements. But cancelling Parandur Airport raises a much bigger question: what is the cost of saying no to development? Chennai desperately needs greater aviation capacity. Bengaluru and Hyderabad have raced ahead with massive greenfield airports, while Chennai continues to operate from a relatively constrained airport. Industries need connectivity. Manufacturing needs cargo capacity. Investors need infrastructure. And every year of delay carries an opportunity cost. At the same time, the concerns surrounding Parandur are real. Farmers could lose their land, families could be displaced, and the proposed Parandur Airport site contains significant agricultural land and water bodies. So where should the line be drawn? I look at why Parandur was selected, why the people of Parandur opposed the project, why Vijay and TVK decided to cancel the Parandur Airport, the limitations of the existing Chennai Airport, and what this decision could mean for Tamil Nadu's future growth. Vijay and TVK say another site will be found. But finding thousands of acres for an airport without affecting farms, settlements or the environment is easier said than done.
