The youngest sister unexpectedly gets an opportunity to participate in a children's beauty pageant, forcing the family to embark on a road trip in an old van to distant California for the competition. However, things are not as simple as they seem. In this family of six, the father has devised a "nine-step success plan" in hopes of starting a business but has never succeeded; the mother struggles with her paranoid husband's torment and battles a smoking addiction, teetering on the edge of divorce; the uncle falls in love with a male student, only to have the student fall for his rival, pushing him to a breaking point and attempted suicide; the older brother despises everything, including his own family, vowing not to speak until he achieves his dream of becoming a pilot; the grandfather repeatedly escapes from the nursing home, indulging in drugs and the so-called twilight years. The only one in the family who seems normal is the sister, who gets the chance to participate in the beauty pageant.
