SILO CRAB: CUT FEED WASTE & COSTS IN THE COW SHED - LPTV INTERVIEW #cattle

Making the best use of use of grass and other forage is the aim of our Silo Crab attachment. In this video, we talk to ‪@LandPowerTV‬ about the Silo Crab we built that we built for Metcalfe Farms collecting feed waste. It was purpose-designed for the farm to save on the time and manpower needed to clean up uneaten silage in front of a feed fence. There's 965m of feed passage that the Silo Crab collects from every day at Metcalfe Farms so it is covering some fair distance scooping up the leftover feed. I chat with James about how the Silo Crab came about, how it works, the prototype and design considerations, and importantly the difference it has made to a job previously carried out by hand shovel. Let's get into it... TOPICS 00:00 Intro 01:20 What's a Silo Crab? 01:40 How a Silo Crab can save farmers time and money 02:35 Why a Silo Crab was needed: feed passage design 03:25 Workrate and performance of the Silo Crab 04:03 Time and manpower savings the Silo Crab has brought 04:30 Design & build of the Silo Crab 06:40 Other applications & industries the Silo Crab could suit 07:30 How to order a Silo Crab 07:57 Design consideration building a Silo Crab 10:02 End As seen in the video, the Silo Crab is a tractor loader-mounted or telehandler-mounted bucket with fold-up 'wings'/panels at the front to scrape and scoop up leftovers from along a feed barrier. Drawing in the scraper panels hydraulically at the end of each run gets the leftovers into the bucket, a job otherwise carried out by hand shovel. Collected material can then be weighed to calculate feed intake and costs, to then accurately adjust and ration feed to minimise waste. We have a demonstrator model of the Silo Crab to take around the UK for farmers to try.
