Why does Sri Lanka’s Northern Province continue to struggle economically despite receiving significant financial support from the Tamil diaspora? In this case study, I take a deep dive into the economy of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province its contribution to national GDP, the reasons behind its relatively low economic output, the impact of decades of conflict, migration of skilled people, lack of major industries and private sector investment, and the role diaspora money plays in the region. For decades, Sri Lankan Tamils living in Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world have financially supported families and communities in the North. These remittances have played an important role in household survival, education, housing, healthcare and recovery. But this video asks a bigger question: Can diaspora money create long term economic growth if much of it remains focused on consumption rather than productive investment? We examine how remittances can affect spending patterns, employment incentives and human capital, while also discussing concerns around unproductive expenditured and the loss or underutilisation of skilled human resources. Importantly, these problems cannot simply be attributed to diaspora support itself; they are also connected to wider structural, historical, social and economic conditions. The case study explores what could happen if more capital were directed towards productive sectors entrepreneurship, startups, agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, technology, tourism, education, professional services and other sustainable industries capable of creating jobs. This is not an argument against supporting families in the North. It is a discussion about how both local communities and the global Tamil diaspora can think beyond short term consumption and towards investment, employment, skills, businesses and sustainable economic development. The future of the Northern Province cannot depend only on money coming in. The bigger question is how that money, talent and global Tamil network can be transformed into productive economic capacity.
