As a parent, have you ever wondered what your child might be missing while spending hours on a screen?
More opportunities for play, conversations, friendships, physical activity, and creative exploration.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasizes age-appropriate media use, healthy family routines, and ensuring that screens do not displace sleep, physical activity, learning, and meaningful interactions.
The 5 Cs of Media Use — AAP Framework
1. Child : Consider your child’s age, developmental stage, individual needs, and temperament.
2. Content — Choose age-appropriate, high-quality content that supports learning and development.
3. Calm — Help children develop healthy ways to manage boredom and big emotions rather than relying on screens every time they feel upset.
4. Crowding Out — Ask what screen time is replacing. Is your child getting enough sleep, outdoor play, reading, family interaction, and physical activity?
5. Communication — Talk with your child about what they watch, explore media together, and create a family media plan.
5 practical steps parents can start today:
✅ Set consistent, age-appropriate screen limits.
✅ Keep mealtimes and bedrooms screen-free where possible.
✅ Encourage outdoor play, reading, sports, and creative activities.
✅ Co-view content and discuss what your child sees.
✅ Model balanced screen habits as parents.
Remember, the goal is not simply to remove screens. It is to create a healthy balance that gives children more opportunities to connect, explore, learn, and grow.
At Mind Meadow, we believe every child deserves opportunities to reach their developmental potential.
