On November 29th, 1864 Chiefs Black Kettle, White Antelope, Left Hand and others were encamped with around 750 Arapaho, and Cheyenne people in a valley by the Big Sandy Creek. Hope for peace brought forth by Black Kettle was in the balance. The chefs believed they were under the protection of the U.S. Army Colonel John M. Chivington led 675 U.S. volunteer soldiers to the village. Although the Cheyenne and Arapaho, under Chiefs Black Kettle, White Antelope, and Left Hand, believed they were under the protection of the U.S. Army, Chivington's troops attacked and killed about 230 people, composed mostly of women, children, and the elderly.
