For more than 3,000 years, China's second dynasty, the Shang, survived only as a name in old books. By the early twentieth century, many scholars were convinced it had never truly existed at all: a legend, like the Xia before it. Then a sick scholar in Beijing was handed his medicine, ground-up "dragon bones", and noticed they were covered in the oldest writing ever found in China.
Those bones were oracle bones: the divination records of the Shang kings. They dragged an entire lost civilization back from the dead, monumental bronzes, a warrior queen who led armies, the birth of the Chinese script still written today, human sacrifice on a vast scale, and a final king whose legendary "tyranny" may be little more than the propaganda of those who destroyed him. This is the story of how the Shang was found, and the brilliant, brutal Bronze Age world it revealed.
We tell the darker chapters, the sacrifices, and the fall of the last king, Di Xin, as fairly as the evidence allows, separating what the earth actually proves from what the victors later wrote.
