It is a prefecture‑level city under Guangdong Province, one of the four Chaoshan cities, also known as Rongcheng. Located in eastern Guangdong, it is backed by mountains in the north, with the north and south branches of the Rongjiang River running through the urban area. With an urban area of about 158 square kilometres, it qualifies as a medium‑sized city, administering Rongcheng District and Jiedong District. Its 2025 GDP ranks roughly 110th nationwide, slightly higher than Loudi (Hunan) and Sanmenxia (Henan), and marginally lower than Deyang (Sichuan) and Pingxiang (Jiangxi). An ancient eastern Guangdong city with profound heritage and a well‑known hometown of overseas Chinese, Jieyang boasts robust county‑level industrial foundations. However, its main urban construction appears somewhat underdeveloped, districts are not fully integrated, creating a noticeable gap between its economic output and urban‑building performance.
