I'm 26, I'm German, and for the last five years I've been building villas here in Bali. Most of the people who hire me are twice my age, so this is the story of how I ended up here. My family has been in construction for over 45 years. At 13 I was taking walls apart with a hammer every Saturday for pocket money. At 21 I came to Bali for one month because I'd worked myself almost to the point of burning out. I flew back to Germany, sold my shares in my companies, and moved out here for good. My first build here went wrong in every way it could go wrong. I'd paid a company to do it, and I still ended up on site every single day checking the concrete and the waterproofing myself.
