Stokowski conducts Dvorak Serenade for Strings - 'Larghetto' - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Leopold Stokowski's discography reveals that the work of Dvorak he recorded the most was the "New World" Symphony, starting with its first American recording in 1925 with the Philadelphia Orchestra. His sixth and last recording of the work was made in 1973 when the maestro was 91. Two years later he recorded Dvorak's Serenade for Strings for an all-strings LP in what was his first and only performance of the work in his entire career. Here is the 'Larghetto' movement which one critic described as "redolent of an affection for the music in a splendid recording." This also featured Vaughan Williams's "Tallis Fantasia" and Stokowski's arrangement of Purcell's "Dido's Lament." The original Desmar recording was reissued on CD by Newton Classics and EMI Classics.
