I found a bizarre Meteorite at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show! And the journey to figure it out has been wild. I took it over to the Meteorite Mansion to slice it open, but even the seasoned experts there couldn't make heads or tails of it. While it is an ordinary chondrite, it features a highly unusual, chunky, thick exterior coating that has completely stumped everyone who has looked at it.
To dig deeper into what makes this coating so strange, I had a professional thin section cut to examine the microscopic structure. I rigged up my own transmitted cross-polarized light to run through my WILD Microscope, so that we can nerd out on this thin section before I donate it to science!
Now, I am getting ready for the next crucial step, which is finding a classifier to take the thin section and the 20-gram type sample to learn more about it.
