There is a Pennsylvania town that went from nothing to 15,000 people and back to a ghost town in about two years. And it is not even the strangest one.
This is the worst town in every one of Pennsylvania's 67 counties, the honest version, county by county, from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. Kensington and the ruins of the old Workshop of the World. Chester, the city that went bankrupt. Reading, once ranked the poorest city of its size in America. The anthracite coal towns, the western oil ghost towns, Johnstown and its floods, Donora and the smog of 1948, and the Monongahela Valley steel towns that the mills built and then walked away from. A few counties don't really have a bad town at all, and I say so.
Because that is the thread through almost all of it: these places were built, and sometimes even named, by the one industry, coal, steel, oil, glass, the railroad, that later left and took everything with it.
