Lester the rat had a Harvard degree. Beakman wasn't a scientist. And the network that aired this show replaced it with a cartoon turtle. This is the real, weird history of Beakman's World.
Beakman's World (1992 to 1997, TLC, syndication and CBS) was the loudest, strangest science show of the nineties, and the story behind it is even stranger. It started with a guy who answered George Lucas's Star Wars fan mail. Its star was an anarchist political puppeteer who got cast because of a lab coat and a spilled cup of water. Bill Nye took shots at it. Mr. Wizard, the man the penguins Don and Herb were named after, wasn't a fan either. CBS buried it at six thirty in the morning, pre-empted it for football, and cancelled its whole educational lineup in 1998. Then a United States senator put Paul Zaloom in a government waste report, and Beakman became a rock star in Mexico and Brazil, where he tours with his own Spanish dub voice actor as his interpreter.
In this Fever Dream Nostalgia deep dive: the Beakman's World origin story, Paul Zaloom's casting, Mark Ritts and the armless rat suit, the Bill Nye feud, the CBS cancellation ranked, why there's no complete DVD, the missing Netflix episodes, and Beakman's second life in Latin America.
So be honest: Beakman or Bill Nye? And which Beakman experiment did you try at home?
